Description
NGC authenticated and graded VF 35. Attractive golden brown with some softness on the upper left reverse before NEW YORKE, but otherwise clear details on nice smooth surfaces. One of about two dozen examples known, a few in pewter and the remainder in brass. These pieces have a somewhat mysterious origin. John Kleeberg speculates these pieces were issued while Francis Lovelace was governor of New York as the reverse mimics the Lovelace family arms, while Wil Nipper theorizes they were tokens for King’s House tavern in Manhattan.
