Description
NGC authenticated and graded MS 65 RB. Lustrous mint red fading to steel brown and chocolate with nearly 20% of the red remaining on the obverse, 35% on the reverse. The surfaces are satiny and void of any spots or stains. The only marks are a dull nick on the upper points of star 8 and a light diagonal nick in the field close before the lips. M-LDS, die state b. The fine die line through star 6 is extremely faint, nearly gone, but the stray 4 punched into the curl over the 85 is clear. Tied for CC#1 honors in the Grellman census, but this example has the most mint red remaining among the top examples. NGC population 1, none finer in RB.
Ex Drake, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 9/2013:416 – John Davis Collection
