Description

PCGS authenticated and graded VF 20. Attractive medium brown with lighter ruddy tan undertones. There are some trivial, old marks in the fields and faint traces of microgranularity and pale green patina in some protected areas, otherwise smooth surfaces. Boldly struck other than around the peripheries from 7 to 9 o’clock on the obverse and the matching reverse areas, obscuring part of the date though the 9 is fully visible. LDS reverse with several “die gouges” resulting in raised lines not seen on other examples, as well as a 5 pointed star just past the J and traces of undertype near the 9 of the date, possibly a flipover double strike or overstruck on another coin. Overall attractive color and excellent eye appeal.  VALUE ME AS YOU PLEASE – J CUT MY WAY THROUGH Broad Axe. 135.4 grains.

Among the finest known of this variety, Freidus recorded 5 known examples with two more discovered since including this coin, the highest grades include an EF-40 and a VF-25 but both have severe file marks and the EF-40 has no visible date.
