CVM DECEMBER 2008
Welcome to our annual Holiday catalog. There are a great many new additions and a broad range of material from colonials to half cents and large cents. An extensive offering of Half Cents, some nice Early Dates, a rarely offered 1830 N-6 in PCGS AU55 and a nice run of Late Dates highlighted by a beautiful group of 1851 cents.
Everything is 10% off the listed price!
It has been a very busy summer and fall. In September we sold the Ray Rouse Half Cent Collection. Also, in our September 14th Sale we sold the first part of the Ted Naftzger Collection. This Early Date portion of Ted’s Collection brought over 2.5 million dollars. The beautiful 1796 S-84 brought a world’s record price for a large cent sold at public auction of $690,000. See our comments on both sales at the back of this catalog.
The Middle Date portion of the Naftzger Collection will be sold February 1st. There are some truly outstanding Cents. March Wells’ Early Date Collection will also be sold in our February Sale. These are two great sales.
We also just completed our 14th Sale for the Colonial Coin Collectors’ Club in Boston. Prices realized are listed at the back of this catalog.
Don’t forget the EAC Collectors’ Sale. We are currently accepting select consignments for that sale. It is always an excellent venue.
I will be attending the following conventions in the next few months: F.U.N. in Orlando, January 6-11, Long Beach, February 5-7, Portland ANA March 13-15, Baltimore, March 26-28, EAC in Cincinnati April 15-19, Central States in Cincinnati April 29-May 2. I hope to see some of you there.
I also need to mention that McCawley & Grellman Auctions has been selected to sell the Dan Holmes Collection by public auction. The Sales will be held in association with Goldberg Auctions of Beverly Hills. We anticipate the Early Date section of the Collection will be sold in the fall of 2009. Please look for further announcements.
Let me wish all of you, from our newest clients to our oldest friends, a very happy and blessed holiday season. And thank you for all your support over this past year.

COLONIALS
1652 Pine Tree Threepence F12 $ 1,250
Medium steel and gray. An uneven strike with some resulting weakness both sides. The date and Pine Tree are sharp. A very acceptable example of this type.
SUPERB LARGE PLANCHET PINE TREE SHILLING
THE RED BOOK PLATE COIN
1652 NOE Pine Tree shilling PCGS AU58 $19,500
Beautiful silver gray. Completely original undipped surfaces. Very sharply struck obverse, very slightly off register towards left obverse. Very sharply struck with a beautiful overall appearance. EAC grade AU55.
RARE WILLOW TREE SIXPENCE
1652 NOE 1-A Crosby-7 R6+ F12 but plugged $42,500
MASSACHUSETTS WILLOW TREE SIXPENCE 35.0 grs. All examples of Massachusetts Willow Tree coinage are classic rarities in the Colonial Coin series. They, along with the NE series that immediately preceded them, represent the first crude coinage struck in what later would become the United States of America. Although clearly exhibiting both a design and technology advance over the minimalist New England shillings and lesser pence denominations struck just before them, Willow Tree coins are among the first fruits of our nation’s early minting technology. Quoting from Lou Jordan’s masterful John Hull, the Mint and the Economics of Massachusetts Coinage: “ The coins we designate as the Willow Tree series appear in many ways to be experimental. The scarcity of the coins suggests they were only minted for a brief period. They are rarer than the NE series and may have had a shorter production period. “ All Willow Tree Sixpences known were struck from one pairing of dies. In the range of 14 extant examples have currently been traced (though it is possible a few more survive) making this an extremely difficult major type coin to acquire. This great rarity is the number 5 specimen on the Noe plate of Willow Tree sixpences, there attributed as the property of a “Mid-West Coin Firm”. When this coin was first plated 60 years ago, only ten examples were known, and this one was holed. Between then and now it has skillfully been plugged, that plug situated at 2:00 obverse/9:00 revere. Most of this coin shows details of at least Strong Fine, but typical for type slight waviness in the planchet contributed to uneven striking and wear with a few legend letters and the last date digit now faint as a result. Quite attractive overall appearance, with most of the Willow Tree sharp, and with surfaces that are a pleasing lilac-gray and steel toning.
(1667-69) St. Patrick Farthing Breen 213 R7+ F12 $ 1,100
G44-9/5b. Medium and darker browns with a small, but bright brass splash. The obverse has moderate fairly even porosity, the reverse is slightly smoother. The obverse is in the group of varieties with dwindling stars after REX.
SUPERB ST. PATRICK HALFPENNY
St. Patrick Half Penny NGC VF20 $ 4,500
Superb lustrous chocolate. Sharply detailed with no planchet problems. Closer to EF by EAC standards.
(1688) Holt’s American Plantation Token EF40 $ 950
Breen 77 Newman 6-F (original). Actual detail of a strong EF, and overall quite pleasing, but with two hidden reverse pin scratches. Neither of the dies used for this striking were ever reused for restrikes, making this an unquestionable original issue. Rather evenly toned a rich medium gray color with light silver outlining the King and horse, this coin completely escaped the scourge of tin pest.
1739-R Vlack 175A R7 MS60 $ 750
French Colonies Sou Marque Orleans Mint. 33.7 grs. An attractive example of a rare sub variety of this date mint combination. Sharp details free of all but the slightest hint of rub, hence the grade assigned. Both sides still show ample silver luster which has begun to turn to a pleasing glossy gray over half of the surfaces. Ex. Vlack collection, Stack’s January 2008, Lot 5115.
1762-BB Vlack -276 R1 AU58 $ 350
French Colonies Sou Marque. Strasbourg Mint. Bright silver gray with nice luster. Ex. Vlack Collection, Stack’s, January 2008:5390.
1723 Wood’s Hibernia Halfpenny R4 VF35 $ 145
M4.59-Gc.4 113.0 gns. Well struck med.chocolate brown. M-LDS.
1723 Wood’s Hibernia Farthing R4 MS62 $ 475
Martin 2.1-Bc4. Another pretty example, this toned an even warm brown except along a line of demarcation on the upper reverse where a planchet imperfection literally alters the plane of the surface, with the surface below that seemingly lower and not as hard as it is below. Still glossy and attractive, this coin is also technically interesting.
1760 Voce Populi Halfpenny Nelson-3 R1 VF25 $ 385
VOOE. Lovely gloss light brown. The obverse is glossy and choice for the grade. The reverse, as typical, is a bit softer but remains complete and shows a bold date.
1760 Voce Populi Halfpenny Nelson-6 R5 VG10 $ 250
Glossy and attractive chocolate brown surfaces, a few trivial hairlines on the reverse don’t change that. From the Frealon Bibbins Collection.
RARE NELSON 14 VOCE POPULI
1760 Voce Populi Halfpenny Nelson-14 R6 EF40 $ 1,550
“P” below bust. An important Voce Populi rarity and likely in the Condition Census for this variety. Fairly glossy with only minor even granularity on dark olive brown surfaces with some high points lighter. Two old dull digs on the obverse neck are well hidden, and otherwise this is essentially problem free. The comparably graded Ford coin was there called “one of the finest seen.”
1760 Voce Populi N-12 PCGS XF40 $ 1,250
Nicely struck light brown. P before face type.
1787 Fugio Cent N-11B NGC MS63 $ 3,750
Sharply struck lustrous brown. A virtually flawless planchet. Sharply struck with all detail sharp including date. A great type coin.
(1863) William Pitt medal. Betts-515 Copper EF+ $ 750
Pleasing glossy light brown with no problems and some remaining luster. This variety, without a signature under the bust truncation of Pitt, was apparently struck in Philadelphia circa 1863 to sell to collectors of that era.
1787 Machin’s Mills Vlack17-87B R2 VF35 $ 1,450
Off Center. 115.3 gns. Wow, this is a pretty coin. Simply Choice, to boil this description down to its one word essence. Struck 5-10% off center to 4:00 obverse, 2:00 reverse which is dramatic in and of itself, but the surfaces on this coin leave nothing realistic to be desired. They are smooth, glossy, chocolate brown, and problem free.
1786 Connecticut copper M.2.1-A R3 VF25 $ 550
Small Head, ET LIB INDE type. A good looking specimen of this easily recognized Redbook variety. Glossy even olive surfaces show the most microscopic granularity under a glass. A tiny mint clip tops the well-detailed obverse. The reverse features nearly full denticles, a complete date, and a wheat sheaf or two on the shield. A desirable major variety.
1786 Connecticut copper. M.5.4-O.1 R2 EF40 $ 750
Attractive dark brown with attractive even color and lively glossy surfaces. Well centered and boldly detailed. Some scattered minor rim nicks are seen, the only serious one of which is over IN of INDE and O of AUCTORI. Dies clashed with the date visible incuse above the obverse portrait. A handsome 1786 type coin.
EXCEPTIONAL M.25-b CONNECTICUT
1787 Connecticut copper. M.25-b R3 AU55 $ 3,250
139.6 gn. An exceptionally nice coin, with lovely light brown toning on hard glossy surfaces. A bit softly struck at the lower reverse shield and globe area, but needle sharp elsewhere, such as Seated Liberty’s hair. Only traces of rub can be found. It almost certainly falls within the Condition Census for this variety, surpassing the Perkins and Oechsner examples.
1787 Connecticut copper. M.31.1-r.4. R2 VF25 $ 295
Painted Die Variety. Pleasing tan devices contrast with darker brown fields. Evenly struck with good detail even at centers, well centered with the date complete.”31 R” has been delicately painted in white ink in the left obverse field, the careful effort of an early collector using his copy of Dr. Hall’s list. A nice example of a PDV.
SUPERB M3.37-V2 CONNECTICUT
1787 Connecticut copper. M33.7-r.2 R1 AU58+ $ 4,500
139.5 gns. Very close to mint state with frosty cartwheel luster showing in protected areas and hints of faded mint color peeking through in a couple places. To truly appreciate the beauty of the finest Ford Collection coins sometimes it is necessary to remove one from the context and study it alone without company of its peers. There are examples of this variety that struck up stronger than this one, but rarely is a Connecticut Copper lovelier. Warm chocolate brown color slowly mellowed from original copper on hard problem free surfaces with only natural roughness. Ex. John J. Ford, Stack’s 5/10/2005:363.
1787 Connecticut copper. M.33.16-Z.15 R4 AU55 $ 3,750
DBL 126.6 gns. An extremely choice coin retaining original luster with tan surfaces, hard and glossy. Aside from natural toning this coin is virtually the same today as the day it left the mint. One tiny nick over the first N on the obverse, and no other problems. Almost certainly in the condition census for this variety, with the Choice AU Ford coin being a contender for finest known.
1787 Connecticut copper. M33.34-Z.11 R5 VF25 $ 950
134.0 gns. Glossy medium brown with darker olive brown in the fields and protected areas, the two tone look accenting the details and enhancing the eye appeal. Struck slightly off center to the top leaving the lower half of the date off the planchet. Otherwise, the date and legends are complete and strong. The attribution is inked into the field off the chin. Ex. Herbert Oechsner, Stack’s 9/8/88:1139-Bob Lomprey, M & G 2006 C4 Sale:354.
1787 Connecticut copper. M.34-ff R5 EF40 $ 650
ET LIR variety. 150.2 gns. The reverse is choice and visually impressive while the obverse looks rougher as it is covered with shallow planchet flakes as struck. Appealing deep tan toning, and glossy. Well centered and struck, bold, full legends and date.
1787 Connecticut copper. M12.1-E R5 AU50 $ 2,250
Struck with near medal die orientation. A superior example, deep chocolate brown and glossy with strong details. What might seem like slight roughness on the obverse is in fact evidence of die failure and rust, the reverse is smooth. One old and faded pin scratch faintly visible on the obverse crossing the Bust at the chin is the only mark of any note. A very attractive example for either type of this variety.
1787 Massachusetts Cent Ryder 2b-A R3 VF20 $ 385
Horned Eagle Type. Smooth and glossy surfaces with some faint obverse striae and die rust on the reverse as frequently seen with this issue.
1788 Massachusetts Cent Ryder 7-M R4+ EF40 $ 2,250
148.2 gns. A relatively smooth and definitely glossy planchet toned a medium olive brown with some ruddy tints, making for an attractive coin. No nicks or scratches, just one small area of minor linear striations by the rim at the upper right obverse.
1788 Massachusetts Cent Ryder 12-I R4- VF20 $ 350
154.9 gns. Toned basically light brown but with a speckling of dark toning across both sides. Smooth and rather glossy, a nice middle grade example of this distinctive variety. Ex. M&G C4 Sale 11/1999:232.
1787 New Jersey copper. Maris 6-C R4 VF25 $ 1,450
The Pattern Reverse. Glossy light steel brown with ideal surface quality. Aside from a single pinprick nick inside the denticles at 3:00 on the obverse, there are no marks or flaws. The date is bold and the usually soft obverse is nicely detailed. An excellent quality specimen of this important variety, one whose reverser is married to some of the rarest and most desirable issues in the early American series---the Immunis Columbia/New Jersey mule, the New Jersey Washington Head, and the 1786 Date Under Plowbeam, among others. This coin has a good pedigree too: Ex. Bowers & Merena’s Boyd, Brand, and Ryder Sale, March 1990, Lot 1204 with lot ticket, earlier Ex. FCC Boyd.
1788 New Jersey Maris 50-f. R2 F18 Head Left $ 2,250
152.8 gns. Attractive light brown with excellent eye appeal and sharp details that suggest VF in many areas. The obverse is ideally centered and bold, despite the usual scattered striations and minor granularity. An arc of die swelling looms behind the horse head and a crack echoes it from EA of CAESAREA to the right side of the date. A handsome Head Left and an ideal type coin.
1787 New Jersey Maris 52.-i R3 VF20 $ 350
143.8gns. Glossy light brown with smooth surfaces. An appealing coin with just minor abrasions consistent with the grade.
FINEST KNOWN M.46e NEW JERSEY
1787 M.46e NEW JERSEY PCGS MS63 $32,500
Fully lustrous light chocolate brown with splashes of mint red. Fully struck E-MDS. The date is complete. Flawless in terms of marks. The finest known of this die variety as listed in the Roger Siboni Census.
NICE VERMONT LANDSCAPE
1785 Vermont Ryder-2 R2 EF40 $ 2,750
VERMONTS type. 133.7gns. Very little if any actual wear, but the surfaces display even and very fine roughness across them, which includes some moderate planchet striations on the obverse. Small portions of both the obverse and reverse legends are not fully struck up, including the E of VERMONTS. Most of the legends however appear bold as to be expected of this grade, the date is full and sharp. Medium golden olive with pleasing darker shadowing at points. Though imperfect, it is very rare to find any VERMONTS Landscape with detail approaching this coin’s, or even one this well centered and complete. Middle Die State, the funnel break has not yet blossomed up through the plow but a thin die break runs from the rim up to it.
Washington Born Virginia Electrotype EF40 $ 550
Superb light brown electrotype of the rare Washington Born Virginia. Hard medium chocolate surface. Well executed.
1792 Rosa Americana Two Pence NGC AU58 $ 2,600
Beautiful tan and brown subdued luster over the entire surface. Hard to see the wear. Well struck with superior planchet quality.
1787 Immunis Columbis NGC XF40 $ 5,500
Nice even chocolate brown. Fully struck with 2/3s of the date on the planchet. Above average quality for this scarce type.
HALF CENTS
1793 C1 B1 G4 R3 F12 $ 4,500
Even Bust Line, Period After America. 94gr. Somewhat sharper, but moderate even porosity. Removed from an old ANACS slab where accurately graded VF details, net F12.
1793 C4, B4, G2 R3 G4 $ 1,750
Hooked Bust Line, Forked Ribbon. Sharpness of Fine, but very rough surfaces and a significant obverse planchet lamination.
HIGH GRADE 1793 C-4
1793 C-4 R3 VF35 $24,000
Sharper by at least 5 points but there is a light rim bruise at the top of the cap, and the bruise was smoothed to minimize its impact. Otherwise, the surfaces and eye appeal of this piece are excellent. Glossy medium chocolate brown slowly blending into a slightly darker shade of chocolate at the bottom of the obverse. Frosty mint luster shows through in the protected areas. LDS, Manley state 2.0.
1794 C2a R2+ VF20 $ 4,250
Small Edge Letters. Attractive glossy medium chocolate and steel brown with reddish chocolate toning covering the neck and lighter brown toning in protected areas of the reverse. No marks or other defects. Quite attractive for the grade. Rare EDS, Manley state 1.0 with no die clashmarks.
1794 C2a,B2b,G5 R3 XF40 $ 6,500
Normal Head, Heavy Wreath, T Leans Left. 101.6 gr. A very smooth deep chocolate. The obverse is choice; the reverse would be but for a tiny rim bump affecting only a few dentils at R. Well-detailed examples like this one are among the most beautiful of all half cents.
1794 C2b R6 VG7 $ 7,500
Large Edge Letters. Sharpness F15 or slightly better in places, but the planchet was flattened at the top leaving LIBER and the opposing area at the left side of the fraction adjacent UN gone or severely weakened. The surfaces are covered with uniform microscopic granularity that is partially obscured under a slightly glossy dark olive and steel patina. No verdigris or additional contact marks. The date is strong and the legends are clear except where affected by the aforementioned dent. The large edge letters are complete and strong, including the ones in the dented area. EDS, Manley state 1.0 without any die clashmarks. The reverse is not rotated. Weight 104.5 gr. In the middle of the condition census with only three examples known grading better than Very Good.
1794 C3a B5b G7 R5 F12 $ 3,500
Normal Head, Cent-type Wreath, Highest Leaves Nearly Touch. M1.0. 106.0 gr. The sharpness is better, but the obverse has some light porosity, and the revere has two short but significant scratches at NIT.
HIGH GRADE 1794 C-4a
1794 C4a R3 PCGS XF45 $12,000
Lustrous light chocolate brown. The rims are clean and there are no detracting marks. LDS. A great date or type coin.
1794 C5a B3b G8 R4+ F15 $ 2,500
Normal Head, Heavy Wreath, T Leans Right. M1.0. 99.4 gr. The sharpness is VF30, but the surfaces are lightly corroded. The eye appeal, however, is very good for the grade. Dark chocolate color.
1794 C-5a R4+ F15+ $ 3,000
VF25 Chocolate fields with tan devices. Some very fine granularity on the reverse. A small mint made clip K10.
1794 C-8 R5 F12+ $ 4,750
VF20 Medium brown. The surfaces are smooth. Some light rim marks K4-5 reverse. Very scarce with decent surfaces.
1794 C-8 R5 F15+ $ 8,500
Sharpness 5 points better, but there is a reddish chocolate brown stain on the cap extending down into the curls below, plus another small splash of this toning at BER. The remainder of the planchet is smooth and offers excellent eye appeal. Dark olive and steel with splashes of reddish chocolate toning. LDS, Manley state 2.0 late. This piece is plated in the second edition of the Cohen Half Cent book to illustrate the variety and in the Breen Encyclopedia to illustrate his die state IV.
1794 C8 B8 G3 R5 VF20 $12,500
High Relief Head, Heavy Wreath, T Leans Right. M1.0. 105.6 gr. Dark brown color. The sharpness is VF30; some obverse scratches are noticeable, but not severe. This coin placed 5th in the 2006 Half Cent Happening and should easily rank among the top 10 of the variety. Ex. H.D. Gibbs; New Netherlands 11/28/52:Robert Schonwalter.
1794 C-9 R2 EF40 $11,500
Choice glossy chocolate brown. Smooth and very attractive, virtually flawless in every respect. A pair of tiny ticks high on the cheek just right of the ear is the only notable marks, and they are wholly insignificant. What may appear initially to be a few minor rim nicks on the reverse are actually strongly impressed edge letters that leave the appearance of a rim mark. M-LDS, Manley state 3.0. Weight 105.9 gr. Removed from an NGC slab graded AU58BN. (NGC label included).
1795 C1 B1 G1 R2 VF25 $ 5,500
Lettered Edge, Normal Date. M1.0. 111.6 gr. Slightly sharper. Very smooth and attractive fields and devices, but there are several small dings in the dentils, primarily on the obverse that distract only minimally. This coin placed seventh for the variety at the 2008 Half Cent Happening.
1795 C-1 R2 VF35 $ 8,500
Lettered Edge. Sharpness EF40 with a few fine vertical hairline scratches in the field before the portrait and a couple barely visible contact marks on the face and neck. Otherwise, the surfaces are outstanding and the eye appeal is excellent. Frosty medium brown. Sharply struck EDS. Manley state 1.0 and nicely centered on the planchet.
1795 C2a B2a G3 R3 VF35 $ 6,500
Lettered Edge, Punctuated Date. M3.0 101.6 gr. Extremely glossy and very choice light brown color. If a very fine coin can be described as a “blazer”, this is it.
1795 C-3 R5+ F12 $ 7,500
Punctuated Date with Plain Edge. Slightly sharper but lightly cleaned and retoned glossy light olive and chocolate brown, the obverse a few shades lighter than the reverse. Extremely rare EDS, Manley state 1.0, with the center of the reverse strong, and this is the Manley plate coin for the die state.
1795 C4 B4 G4 R3 F15 $ 1,500
Plain Edge, Punctuated Date, Lowest Leaf at N. m2.0. 78.2 gr. Medium chocolate color that may not be original. Sharpness of VF, but the surfaces are slightly granular. No major marks, verdigris, or rim dings.
1795 C-4 R3 VF30 $ 4,250
Choice frosty medium brown and light chocolate. Great eye appeal except for the usual weakness in the centers. The only contact marks are a faint hairline scratch from the lips to the cap and a blunt rim nick opposite the lips. The softly struck area in the centers displays some of the usual microscopic planchet chips that didn’t strike out completely. HALF CENT is weak and a few letters are missing completely, which is characteristic of the late die state. The areas closer to the rim on both sides are sharply struck and display very little wear suggesting an even higher grade. LDS, Manley state 2.0. Weight 83.5 grains.
1796 C-2 R4 G6 $22,500
Sharper. Dark steel with evenly granular surfaces. No detracting marks or defects. The date, of course, is sharp and full. This date is becoming increasingly difficult to find.
1796 C-2 WITH POLE EX. HARLAN P. SMITH
1796 C-2 R4 VF30 $55,000
With Pole. Sharpness EF40 with a half dozen light hairline scratches that meander around the obverse fields. They blend perfectly with the attractive natural glossy chocolate and light olive brown toning. Otherwise, the surfaces are choice and the eye appeal of this piece is outstanding. The reverse is flawless. The fields are hard and slightly reflective on both sides suggesting an early strike from the dies. Removed from a PCGS slab with an old green label graded XF40 (PCGS label included). Weight 84.2 grains. Comes with a marvelous provenance. Ex. E. Harrison Sanford, Edward Cogan 11/27/1874:309, Lorin G. Parmelee, New York Coin & Stamp Co (Harlan P. Smith & David Proskey) 6/25/1890:733-Byron Reed-Reed Estate 1891-Omaha City Library-John J. Pittman, David Akers Auctions-Chris McCawley FPL Winter 2003.
1797 C1 R2 F15 $ 1,050
VF20 Smooth chocolate. An almost invisible hairline scratch reverse K12. Some evidence of TAL undertype. MDS. Nice type coin.
1797 C1 B1 GE R2 F15 $ 1,500
1 Above 1. m1.0 87.2 gr. Fairly dark brown color and attractive as one of the few perfect die examples of this variety that generally comes with a shattered obverse. The sharpness is at least VF25, but the obverse has a number of hairlines, visible with a glass.
1797 C1 B1 G4 R2 XF40 $ 4,850
1 Above 1. m5.0. 84.0 gr. Very choice, lustrous terminal die state example that clearly shows the results of the shattered, buckled and weakened obverse die; obviously the Mint needed to use this die well beyond its normal life span. This is the plate coin for the variety at CoinFacts.com.
1797 C-2 R3 F12 $ 1,250
Medium chocolate with hard smooth surfaces. Weakness in central reverse.
1797 C2 B2 G3 R3 XF45 $ 9,500
Normal Date, Centered Head, Long Dentils. 83.8 gr. A high grade example of the most aesthetically pleasing Gardiner Liberty Cap half cent variety. Medium brown in color and has choice surfaces, except for a small, darker peripheral area at TATE (the darker color does not result from corrosion).
1797 C3a B3c G2 R3+ VG10 $ 2,750
Low Head, Plain Edge. Appears to be earlier than M1.0 77.2 gr. Sharpness VF25 or better. Struck in 1800 on cent stock, this example shows light granularity and a long, thin obverse scratch that originates from a deeper dig that almost obliterates E. Nearly all examples of this variety are porous, and it is very difficult to find one so sharp.
1797 C3b B3a G1 R4 VG10 $ 5,500
Low Head, Lettered Edge. M1.0 79.2 gr. Details of a much higher grade, close to XF, but there are a number of small pits, and the obverse was burnished to smooth an area before the neck. There are a couple of small, but deep, peripheral reverse digs, and the coin is out of round, presumably from having been improperly punched out of the large cent planchet. Ex. J.R. Frankenfield Superior 2/17/01:98.
1797 C-3b R4 PCGS G6 Lettered Edge $ 7,500
A nice VG by EAC standards. Medium brown color. The surfaces are smooth. Much half cent undertype is visible, notably parts of the wreath are clearly visible in the field before Liberty’s face. Very difficult to find with nice surfaces.
1797 C-3a R3 G4 $ 450
Low Head with Plain Edge. The obverse is a bit better while the reverse is weaker. Glossy light olive brown and chocolate. The date is bold, but the reverse legend is weak and a few letters are missing. EDS, scarce Manley state 1.0.
1797 C-3a R3 VG10 LOW HEAD $ 1.250
Medium brown. Few streaks of darker tone. No detracting marks.
1800 C1 B1a G1 R2 VG10 $ 350
M2.0. 87.2 gr. Very rare early die state after a severe die clash left LI above UNI, but before the surfaces were ground down, weakening the peripheries. Very nice light brown example. Some light hairlines on the portrait.
1800 C1 B1a G1 R2 VG10 $ 350
M2.0 85.6 gr. Another example of the very rare early die state after a severe die clash left LI above UNI, but before the surfaces were ground down, weakening the peripheries. Chocolate brown.
1800 C1 B1a G1 R2 F12 $ 400
M1.0 85.0 gr. This is the extremely rare early die state with the date and lowest hair curl bold, sharp dentilation and only a small reverse die flaw from the wreath to E.
SUPERB 1800 FIRST REVERSE
1800 C-1 R1 NGC MS64BN $ 6,500
Beautiful chocolate with full frosty mint luster and some mint red on the reverse. Fully struck both obverse and reverse. None of the pre-striking planchet roughness sometimes found on this variety. A one year type coin.
1800 C1 B1b G1 R2 MS63 RB $ 7,500
M4.0 83.4 grs Lustrous red, brown, and tan surfaces with excellent cartwheel. Mid-late die state.
1802 C2 B2 G1 R2+ F15 $ 5,500
Reverse of 1802. Two Leaves at Top Right of Wreath. M2.0. 77.8 gr. A dark coin with lighter devices that give it a bit of a cameo contrast. Sharpness of VF20.There are a couple of scratches fairly well hidden in the bust, but the reverse is mark free. Unusually, HALF CENT is completely legible, though the E is weaker than the other letters.
1802 C-2 R3 VG7 $ 2,000
Medium brown with smooth problem free surfaces. Choice for grade.
1802/0 C-2 R3 F12 $ 4,500
Rather glossy chocolate brown. A few tiny nicks and hairline scratches are hidden in the patina and die roughness. LDS.
1802 C-2 R3 VF20 $ 8,500
VF30 Choice medium brown color with a hard smooth surface, but there are some old dull scratches under the hair ribbon and a couple more in the obverse field. This is not perfect, but it is till head and shoulders above most examples.
1803 C-1 R1 EF45 $ 1,500
AU50 Lustrous chocolate with a trace of faded red. A minute nick above e of LIBERTY. A spot of oxidation at R of AMERICA.

Reverse of 1805. 83.2 gr. Excellent surfaces and color with much remaining mint frost, especially on the reverse, which is upset. Placed 6th finest at the 2007 Half Cent Happening.
1804 C-1 R3 VF35 $ 1,200
Sharper by 5 points but lightly cleaned and expertly retoned glossy chocolate brown. The surfaces are smooth and there are only a few trivial contact marks, including a dull one that connects the second S in STATES to the adjacent O in OF. MDS, Manley state 2.0. The arcing die crack at the top of the reverse is strong and the area outlined by this crack is slightly raised suggestive of a retained cud.
1804 C1 B1 G6 R3 XF40 $ 4,500
Crosslet 4, Stems, Cross-eyed Zeroes. M1.0 87.2 gr. This is a lovely example of the early die state. Lustrous, mottled surfaces show little or no wear, but there is a line of small pinpricks in the field from the rim at K5 to the jaw line that identifies this as the Breen State IV plate coin. Bill Weber owned this coin for nearly 28 years. The Weber ticket and envelope, which contains an interesting anti-Breen screed apparently penned by Roger Cohen, are included.
1804 C5, B4a, G11 R4 VG8 $ 500
Spiked Chin, widest Fraction. M3.0 83.2gr. A scarce variety in a very rare die state. The die injuries that produced the spiked chin, protruding tongue and curved marks in the field have occurred, but the obverse field has not yet bulged in front of Ms. Liberty’s face.
1804 C-5 R3 EF40 $ 1,750
F12 Reddish chocolate with hard smooth surfaces, but some old pinscratches in obverse field and on forehead K2.
1804 C-5 R3 EF40 $ 2,450
Medium chocolate brown with hard smooth surfaces. A minor bruise under the 4. A tiny nick under O of OF. Strong bisecting reverser break. M.5.0.
1804 C6, B6, G8 R2 F12 $ 125
Spiked Chin, Wide Fraction, Triplet Leaves at O. M9.5. 79.0 gr. The cud at UN has extended under the 20. Sharpness is better, but a couple of pin scratches below S OF reduce the grade.
1804 C6, B6, G8 R2 VF25 $ 175
Spiked Chin, Wide Fraction, Triplet Leaves at O. M2.2. 86.6 gr. Sharper, but cleaned and retoned. A retained cud is forming above U.
1804 C6, B6, G8 R2 VF30 $ 400
Spiked Chin, Wide Fraction, Triplet Leaves at O. M1.0 84.6gr. Attractive, medium brown color and nice surfaces. Lightly cracked through most of the reverse legend.
1804 C6, B6, G8 R2 EF40 $ 500
Spiked Chin, Wide Fraction, Triplet Leaves at O. M12.0. 85.2 gr. The terminal die state for this variety. The crack at OF has thickened to form a retained cud.
1804 C6, B6, G8 R2 F12 $ 650
Spiked Chin, Wide Fraction, Triplet Leaves at O. “M10.4” (not in Manley). 85.8gr. This extremely rare state, intermediate between M10.2 and M10.5, characterized by a thickening of the M10.2 crack to form a retained cud, is interesting as it shows how the M10.5 break formed.
1804 C6, B6, G8 R2 F12 $ 650
Spiked Chin, Wide Fraction, Triplet Leaves at O. M10.5. 81.2 gr. In this very rare die state, the retained cud at M10.4 has fallen out, leaving a hole over the M.
1804 C6. B6, G8 R2 F15 $ 750
Spiked Chin, Wide Fraction, Triplet Leaves at O. M4.0. 80.6 gr. Extremely rare die state in which the crack about ME has formed a retained cud.
1804 C-6 R1 EF45 $ 1,250
Glossy chocolate brown. Small nick on Liberty’s neck. Early die state M.1.0.
1804 C6, B6, G8 R2 XF45 $ 1,250
Spiked Chin, Wide Fraction, Triplet Leaves at O. M10.2. 84.8 gr. There is a thick crack from M to the rim above AM. Choice and attractive for this very rare die state.
1804 C6 R2 AU55 $ 3,250
Spiked Chin. Choice lustrous chocolate and steel brown. The fields are satiny and the surfaces are flawless. Just a touch of friction on the highpoints from mint state. The only mark is a rim nick over the right side of the M in AMERICA. LDS, Manley state 11.0, Braig state 8.0, with an extensive series of rim cuds on the reverse. The Spiked Chin is obvious. Removed from a PCGS slab graded MS63BN (PCGS label included, and it mentions the Spiked Chin feature)..
1804 C7, B5, G9 R4 VF20 $ 3,500
Spiked Chin, Triplet Leaves Between OF. M1.0. 84.2 gr. Mint Error. The obverse is double-struck with a slight rotation, most obvious at the face and chin. The reverse is truck over a full obverse brockage with LIBERTY readable at the fraction a generous amount of scattered undertype visible elsewhere. Sharpness is VF25 or better, but there are a couple of scratches hidden in the hair and a couple of relatively hard reverse rim hits that affect only the dentils at K5.
1804 C8, B7, G7 R1 EF45 $ 550
Spiked Chin, Zeroes Almost Touch. M6.0. 87.4 gr. Attractive, lustrous medium brown example of the terminal die state of the last Spiked Chin half cent variety struck. Obverse cud now covers LIBE and touches R.
1804 C8, B7, G7 R1 EF40 $ 850
Spiked Chin, Zeroes Almost Touch. M1.0. 81.2 gr. The earliest and rarest die state of the last and most common of the Spiked chin varieties. All later die state of this reverse (C8, C9, C10) show a prominent die flaw or crack at R that would be diagnostic for the die, were it not for the few examples in this very rare die state.
1804 C-8 R1 EF40+ $ 1,050
Spiked Chin. Slightly sharper with an extremely faint scuff of microscopic hairlines in the field behind the portrait. These hairlines are only visible when you get the light at just the right angle, and even then they are easy to miss. Otherwise, the surfaces are frosty and the eye appeal is excellent. Very close to EF45 in spite of the faint scuff. E-MDS, Manley state 2.0, with a light die crack up from the top of the L in LIBERTY to the dentils in addition to the earlier fine crack passing through the tops of those letters. The Spiked Chin is clear.
1804 C-8 R1 EF45 SPIKED CHIN $ 1,250
Steel brown with an exceptionally sharp strike. Mark free surfaces.
1804 C-8 R1 NGC MS62 BN $ 2,450
Spiked Chin. Frosty golden light steel brown with overtones of light bluish steel in protected areas. The surfaces are satiny and free of any spots, stains, or notable signs of contact. Just a bit of rub on the highpoints from mint state. E-MDS, Manley state 2.0. The strike is decent but there is minor weakness in the leaves on the lower part of the wreath. The Spiked Chin feature is strong. EAC grade AU58.
1804 C8, B7, G7 R1 AU58 $ 2,500
Spiked Chin, Zeroes Almost Touch. M4.0. 90.6gr. This is a choice Mint State coin with an old, short nick at the neck. Satiny luster and an unusual, almost grey color. Scarce intermediate die state with the obverse cud over L. Struck on an overweight planchet.
1804 C-9 R2 VF25+ M5.0 $ 550
VF30+ Medium brown. Some minor marks. The crack arcing down through the hair and out into the field above the hair ribbon is sharp. A rare die state. M.5.0.
1804 C9, B8, G5 R2 XF45 $ 1,250
Crosslet 4, Stems, Widest Date. M4.0. 85.2 gr. An attractive red and brown example with Mint State sharpness of the late die state with the cud at RTY, but before the crack formed from the 4 to the bust and rim. Coin has been cleaned and very attractively retoned, making it look like a red and brown UNC. Superb eye appeal. Placed 4th in the 2007 Half Cent Happening.
PRETTY 1804 C-9
1804 C9, B8, G5 R2 AU58 $ 5,500
Crosslet 4, Stems, Widest Date. M1.0. 76.4 gr. A beautiful two-toned example of this tough variety. Obverse shows a trace of friction of the cheek and shoulder; the reverse is Mint State. Placed 6th for the variety in the 2007 Half Cent Happening. Planchet is 10% lightweight.
1804 C10, B9, G4 R1 MS60 $ 2,250
Crosslet 4, Straight Up, Stems. M3.0. 85.2 gr. Choice, lustrous and sharp example. Medium brown with a few traces of dirt in the drapery folds.
1804 C-11 R2 VF25 $ 650
PLAIN 4 WITH STEMS. Ten points sharper but covered with uniform microscopic granularity. EDS.
1804 C-11 R2 VF30 $ 1,550
PLAIN 4 WITH STEMS. Slightly sharper but there are a few too many light nicks for the higher grade, none notable or distracting. Glossy light olive and chocolate brown with traces of frosty lighter reddish brown toning in protected areas. MDS, Manley state 2.0.
RARELY OFFERED 1804 C-11 PLAIN 4 WITH STEMS
1804 C-11 R3 PCGS XF45 $ 5,500
Plain 4 with Stems. Lustrous light chocolate brown with some faded tan. Well struck.
1804 C-12 R2 AU58 $ 1,650
Crosslet 4 without Stems. Very close to mint state, just a hint of friction on the highest points of the design, but a faint hairline scratch from the temple into the hair left of the eye and a tiny rim bruise at the B in LIBERTY keep this piece from a slightly higher grade. Lustrous light brown and tan delicately mottled with darker steel brown. Peeps of faded mint color can be found in some of the protected areas.
1804 C-13 R1 VF35 $ 275
Medium chocolate brown.
1805 C1, B1, G1 R1 G4 $ 650
Small 5 Without Stems. Mint Error, Double Struck. 78.2 gr. Strongly double struck obverse with substantial rotation between the strikes. Somewhat rough surfaces, but a very neat Mint Error with a two-faced Liberty.
1805 C1, B1, G1 R1 AU55 $ 2,000
Small 5 Without Stems. M2.0. 84.0gr. Lustrous and attractive. Medium brown with traces of faded red in the protected areas, especially on the reverse. Plated on cover of the 2005 EAC brochure.
1805 C-1 R2 PCGS AU58 $ 4,250
Choice lustrous tan faded from mint color. Some rub on the highest points.
1805 C3 R5 VG7 $ 1,750
Dark chocolate and tan. Some minute granularity. Smooth appearance with no defects.
1805 C3, B3, G3 R5 F12 $ 2,500
Small 5 With Stems, Triplet Leaves Between OF. M2.0. 74.8gr. Very well detailed example of this very rare Red Book variety. Surfaces evenly corroded. Weakly struck on reverse as is typical of the variety. Planchet is lightweight.
SHARP 1805 SMALL 5 WITH STEMS
1805 C-3 R5 F15+ $ 3,800
Small 5 with Stems. Sharpness VF30 with very fine granularity covering the fields and protected areas. Slightly glossy dark steel and olive with lighter steel brown highpoints. LDS.
1805 C-4 R2- AU50 $ 2,250
Large 5. Possible Broadstrike. Frosty chocolate brown and steel with a thin swipe of darker chocolate toning at the rim on the lower left of the obverse and upper left reverse. Lustrous lighter brown and tan covers the protected areas on the reverse. A nick-like planchet void on the rim below the 0 in the date and a shallow nick on the rim right of the chin are the only notable marks. LDS, Manley state 2.0 late, Breen state VI. The die crack through the end of the bust is strong. In addition, the rims are wide and flat on much of both sides. However, the wide rim feature is not consistent all the way around the rims as if the collar made good contact with parts of the planchet, but not all of it during the striking process. Makes an interesting puzzle.
1806 C-2 R4 VF30 $ 4,000
Small 6 With Stems. Glossy chocolate brown delicately mixed with lighter steel brown and reddish chocolate tones. No distracting marks or other defects. Nicely struck S, Manley state 2.0.
1806 C4, B4, G3 R1 AU55 $ 1,250
Large 6 with Stems. 79.2 gr. This very lustrous coin is an unusual example of the variety. The drapery is strong and full, as is the repunching on the 6. Dies were out of alignment, resulting in weakness at LIB and the lower reverse. A few minor, ancient scratches on the portrait. Brown with some tan from faded Mint color. Lots of cartwheel.
1806 C4 R1 PCGS AU58 $ 1,450
Pretty golden tan and sea green tone. Some rub on cheek. A typical hoard coin. Fully lustrous.
1806 C4, B4, G3 R1 MS60 $ 1,650
Large 6 With Stems. 84.0gr. A lovely, lustrous brown example of the hoard variety. Coin judge 6th finest at the 2006 Half Cent Happening.

Nice lustrous chocolate. M-LDS.
1807 C-1 R1 VF20 $ 650

1807 C-1 R1 VF25 $ 1,250
Medium chocolate brown. Scarce EDS M1.0. Rarely found except in low grades.
1807 C-1 R1 PCGS AU53 $ 2,750
Lustrous chocolate with faded tan and mint color reverse. Very well struck for the date. M-LDS.
HIGH GRADE EARLY DIE STATE 1807 C-1
1807 C-1 R1 EF40 $ 2,750
Frosty steel brown with lustrous lighter brown in protected areas and darker steel brown highpoints. The only marks are a few small, faint spots of darker toning scattered over the obverse and a collection of microscopic pinpricks at the leaf under TA in STATES. E-MDS, Manley state 1.0 late, with the obverse slightly misaligned to K9 and the reverse rotated 15 degrees CCW. Seldom found in a die state this early.
OFF CENTER 1807 C-1
1807 C-1 R1 NGC VF30 $ 3,850
Off Center. Olive chocolate with a hard smooth surface. Struck at least 10% off center obverse and reverse. A great looking error.
1807 C-1 R1 AU58 $ 4,500
Superb lustrous chocolate with full cartwheel and frosty surfaces. Mark free. Just a trace of friction. MDS. Really a beautiful Half Cent.
1808/7 C-2 F12 $ 750
VF20 Dark chocolate and evenly granular surface. A tiny nick near obverse rim K7. Otherwise, virtually mark free. Unusually early die state with no cracks.
1808 C2, B2, G2 R3 VF25 $ 2,500
Second 8 Over 7, Leaf Distant from D. M1.0. 86.4 gr. A glossy, attractive medium brown example of the more common of the 1808 overdate varieties. Reverse is sharper with some mint frost remaining.
1808 C-3 VG10 $ 2,200
Double Struck. Nice brown. Double struck obverse and reverse with 45 degree rotation. A nice Half Cent error.
PRETTY 1808 C-3
1808 C3, B3, G2 R1 AU55 $ 3,000
Normal Date. M3.0. Choice, lustrous example that is certainly among the finest known. Medium brown with an arc of lighter color inside the left obverse rim and some cartwheel. A few ancient, minor, light reverse scratches. Placed 7th at the 2008 Half Cent Happening. Obverse was plated on the front cover of the 2008 EAC brochure.
1809 C-1 R4 G4 $ 550
Granular brown. But still rare.
1809 C1, B2, not in Gilbert. R5 VG10 $ 4,500
Straight Date, Leaf Below S. 82.6 gr. Sharpness F12. Dark fields with lighter devices and light overall porosity.
1809 C-2 R3 EF40 $ 1,750
Sharpness near AU50 but the reverse is covered with microscopic pinpricks. Dark chocolate brown. Manley state 2.0. Ex. Michael Spurlock.
PRETTY 1809 C-3
1809 C3, B4, G4 R1 MS63 RB $ 4,000
Wide Date. M2.0. Red and brown with mint color. Obverse color is fairly even except for a light, ancient fingerprint on the left field; the reverse color is more mixed with areas of red and areas of brown. The cartwheel is intense. Very late die state with weak peripheral lettering, dentils, and stars due to advanced die wear and a small cud (not a rim bump) at F.
1809 C-4 R1 VF20 $ 275
Circle in O. Slightly sharper . Chocolate. Finely granular. Getting impossible to fine.
1809 C-4 R1 NGC AU55 $ 2,250
Circle in O. Well struck chocolate steel. Problem free. Popular Circle in O Redbook variety. Increasingly difficult to find.
1809 C5, B5, G5 R1 XF45 $ 900
Repunched 9. M1.0. Very sharp, very early die state. All aspects of the design are fully struck, the surfaces are choice, and the color is medium brown.
1809 C5, B5, G5 R1 MS60+ $ 3,500
Repunched 9. M3.0. A choice, gorgeous, satiny, light brown Mint state coin. Color is even, except for a small darker area below Ms. Liberty's eye and a couple of darker splashes on the reverse. A beautiful, fully-original coin that has never been messed with. Early copper rarely comes any nicer than this.
1809 C6, B6, G2 R1 G4 $ 750
Curl Between 09. Mint Error. Offset Double Strike. A very interesting double strike. The first strike was off-center by 50%, whereas the second strike was properly centered. You can see the tops of two different heads, including two complete hair bands. Rather low grade, but the Mint Error is quite obvious, unusual, and spectacular.
1809 C6, B6, G2 R1 MS60+ $ 2,500
Curl Between 09. M2.0. 86.6 gr. Lustrous light brown with areas of reddish orange toning. Sharply struck except for K7-8 of the obverse and the corresponding area of the reverse.
1810 C-1 R1+ XF40 $ 700
Die State 2.0 84.6 gr. Attractive, medium chocolate brown color with hard surfaces; a middle die state example and unusual for having the stars on the right side well struck and those on the left weaker. Normal die alignment.
1810 C-1 R1+ XF45 $ 900
Die State 3.0. 82.6gr. Sharpness better, but recolored. Extremely late die state with the stars on the right incomplete and merging into the rim, loss of most hair detail above the hair band, and a very heavy crack at the throat. This coin was plated to illustrate the terminal die state in the article in P-W on 1810 die state. Reverse is rotated about 30 degrees counterclockwise.
MINT STATE 1810 C-1
1810 C-1 R1+ MS60+ $11,000
Die State 1.0. Choice, lustrous, colorful surfaces that show a mixture of brown, tan and steel, with traces of mint red. Unusually sharp. Full dentilation on both sides and all stars fully outlined.
HIGH GRADE 1811 C-1
1811 C-1 R4 PCGS XF40 $ 4,850
Sharply struck medium chocolate brown. Problem free. EAC VF35.
HIGH GRADE 1811 C-2
1811 C2, B2, G1, R2 EF40 $ 6,000
Close Date. M1.0. This example exhibits EF45 sharpness from a very strong strike, but the surfaces are dark and a little dull because of the poor quality of the planchet on which it was struck. Certainly one of the finer examples of this scarce variety.
RARE 1811 MICKLEY RESTRIKE
1811 Mickley Restrike R7 PCGS MS64 BN $28,500
Frosty uniform light to medium brown. A tiny pinscratch on the bottom of star 2 and a small, shallow contact mark under the right side of the E in CENT are the only signs of contact, and both are wholly insignificant. The best identifying mark is a small spot of very fine carbon over the left side of the F in HALF. Both sides show the usual collection of fine die rust (microscopic lumps on the coin’s surface) from the mint dies that had been discarded and became rusted before being rescued for this final use. These restrikes were made sometime prior to 1859 by Joseph Mickley using scrap dies he obtained from the mint or some intermediary. The obverse die is the normal 1811 C-2 die and the reverse is from the 1802/0 C-2 marriage. Both dies were heavily rusted when acquired and were lapped to reduce the roughness prior to striking these “restrikes”. The restrikes are sometimes called Proof strikes, but the condition of the dies used and the lack of reflectivity in the fields makes such a judgment highly questionable. Regardless, these are extremely rare and are highly coveted additions to any advanced collection of half cents. The PCGS slab grade of MS64 BN is joined by a CAC certification sticker. EAC grade MS60+.
1825 C-2 R1 NCG AU55 $ 550
Frosty light brown. Great luster. A tiny bit of rub from mint state.
1825 C-2 R1 AU50 $ 750
Frosty chocolate brown with lighter brown and tan faded down from mint color in protected areas, especially on the reverse. A small, well-hidden dark spot is located in the hair above the ear. Sharply struck EDS. Manley state 1.0 early. The reverse die clashmarks of the earlier 25 C1 die marriage are present., including the “egg” lump between the F and A (Manley says these were lapped off the die before this marriage, but a few early examples showing the clashmarks have come to light since the book published). Undoubtedly a rare die state.
1825 C-2 R1 NGC MS63 $ 2,500
Chocolate with fully lustrous surfaces. Virtually flawless surfaces. A scarce date in uncirculated grades.
PROOFLIKE 1825 C-2 EX. JULES REIVER
1825 C2, B2, G1 R1 MS63 $ 4,500
Curl Above 25. M1.0. Magnificent example from the Jules Reiver collection, where slabbed by NGC as MS62 and described as follows: “This coin was catalogued by Wayte Raymond as a Proof in 1947. …Unusually toned, the obverse is mostly dark brown with olive undertones and considerable original Mint red through the stars. The revere has an iridescent display with bright green and pale blue inside the wreath, a ring of original color through the leaves, and dark brown color outside the wreath.” After liberation from its slab and alight brushing, the true flashy luster that fooled The Great Wayte into thinking it was a Proof was revealed.
1828 C-1 R1 AU55 $ 475
Tan with some spots but semi-prooflike surfaces.
1828 C-1 R1 AU58 $ 550
Choice glossy medium brown with light chocolate highpoints. Frosty mint luster shows in the protected areas. No defects, just a hint of rub on the highest points. E-MDS, Manley state 2.0.

Thirteen Stars, Even Date. M2.0. Least common of the 1828 varieties.

1828 C-3 R1 AU58 $ 475
Lustrous chocolate brown with hints of bluish steel toning.
1828 C3, B2, G1 R1 MS64 $ 2,000
Thirteen Stars, 2 Punched Too Low. M1.0 or 2.0. Choice and spot free, full Mint red, though an area at the upper right obverse is beginning to tone. Common, but exceptionally nice for the variety.

Choice light walnut brown. Some bluish steel and a trace of faded red on the reverse.
1832 C-2 R2 EF45 $ 250
Frosty light to medium brown with glossy chocolate highpoints.
1835 C2, B2, G1 R1 MS64 $ 1,500
ST Close Together. M3.0. Beautiful spot-free gem, this coin has about 30% original Mint red on the obverse and 90% on the revere. Obverse red is in a circle around the stars, date and above Ms. Liberty’s head. Center obverse has toned to light brown. Scarce late die state with the reverse crack.
1835 C-2 R1 PCGS MS64 RD $ 5,500
Brilliant full red. One tiny spot to left of star 13. LDS with all reverse cracks. EAC MS65.
1837 Half Cent Token Low-49 Rulau HT-73 MS62 $ 1,200
Very attractive lustrous bluish steel brown and chocolate. The obverse is highly lustrous and offers eye appeal far better than usually seen on this variety. The reverse is choice as well but not quite as lustrous. True mint state pieces are quite rare.
1837 Hulseman Token Low 49 XF45 $ 200
Half Cent Worth of Pure Copper. 83.0 gr. Sharply struck and attractive example of the only Hard Times Token of the denomination. An attractive AU coin, the grade is slightly reduced for a tiny, toned over scratch in the upper part of the shield and a hairline at K5 on the reverse.
PROOF ONLY 1849 SMALL DATE
1849 Breen 1B R6+ Proof 60+ $ 7,500
Small Date First Restrike. Attractive uniform light brown with delicate overtones of bluish steel and iridescent rose in protected areas. No spots, stains, or contact marks. The only defect is a tiny mint-made struck-through line on the middle of the jaw line caused by a tiny piece of debris on the die. The fields are smooth and reflective, but the mirrors are not especially deep. Most likely lightly cleaned long ago, as were most of the pieces in the famous King Farouk palace collection. This piece is on #7 in Rick Coleman’s list of first restrike 1849 proofs. Weight 85.5 grains. Comes with an important provenance. Ex. King Farouk (The Palace Collection), Sotheby’s 1954-A. Buol Hinman, Paramount International Coin Co, 4/30/65:123-Ellis Robison, Stack’s 2/10/82:384-Martin Paul (The Rarities Group)-

1849 C-1 R2- AU58 $ 495
Large Date. Mint state sharpness but there is a small stain of dark olive at the dentils left of star 5, and this stain contains microscopic traces of fine carbon or other crud. Otherwise, the surfaces are choice, virtually flawless except for a tiny tick at the base of the dentils over the I in UNITED. PROOF ONLY 1852 FIRST RESTRIKE
1852 BREEN 1-B R5 PROOF 50 $ 3,750
FIRST RESTRIKE. Lightly cleaned long ago, now retoned light brown on the obverse and medium chocolate brown on the reverse. The fields are reflective, but the mirrors are not deep. The notable marks are a splash of darker steel brown toning above the head at stars 7-8, a tiny planchet flake near the leaves under CE in CENT, and a faint planchet lamination down from the right base of the F in HALF, the last two defects being mint made. A decent examples as is, but a proper retoning on the obverse would improve the eye appeal. Weight 83.1 grains.

LARGE CENTS
DECENT 1793 CHAIN AMERI
1793 S-1 VG8 $15,500
Sharpness F12 or sharper on the reverse. The obverse has a full date and portrait and a readable Liberty. The color is dark steel with a few hairlines. The reverse is both sharper and more pristine. Everything is very sharp and only slightly granular surfaces detract as there are no notable marks. These are quickly disappearing.
1793 S-3 R3 AG3 $ 2,650
An interesting coin. Chocolate steel fields with lighter brown devices. Free of marks or damage. Very evenly worn. The date is readable though faint. The portrait and Liberty are full. The chain, ONE CENT, and fraction are fully readable, but much of the peripheral legend is faint or missing. Very worn, but unusually nice for the grade.
1793 S-3 R3 G6 $12,000
Very nice attractive medium brown. Well struck on a hard, smooth planchet. The reverse is struck very slightly off center affecting the tops of STATES. Otherwise the legends are complete. A strong full date, sharp Liberty and portrait. Exceptional quality for this type in any grade.

Medium chocolate brown. Well struck with a hard smooth surface. A beautiful cent. EAC grade consistent.

PRETTY 1793 S-11c
1793 S-11c R3- VF35 $17,500
An astonishing coin. The obverse color is half golden tan and half reddish brown. Some areas of reddish brown have oxidized while the tan areas are lustrous. The reverse is a uniform golden tan and with the exception of a couple lamination lines problem free. The detail is at least EF45 and very sharply struck. Unusual for this variety. This coin was put away after very little circulation and then stored in a semi-protected environment for a very long time. A cent with a story to tell if it could speak.
1793 S-12 R6- PCGS F15 $65,000
VF20 or slightly sharper. Nice chocolate fields with tan devices. A few old pinscratches in the fields. Well struck centers, even on the reverse. A very desirable cent. Fifth finest known of the variety.
1793 S-13 R4- PCGS AG3 $12,000
The obverse is G5 with a readable date, full portrait, and LIBERTY. The reverse shows most of wreath and the fraction mark. Much of legend and ONE CENT is weak or missing. Problem free surfaces which are choice for the grade. Even chocolate color.
1793 S-13 R4- VG10 $16,500
Liberty Cap. Sharpness VF25 but lightly corroded and there is dark greenish verdigris patinated over much of both sides suggesting this cent was lost in soil for a while. The highpoints of the design are smooth and the details are bold in spite of the imperfect surfaces. Partly glossy dark olive and chocolate. Nicely struck EDS, Breen state I.
1793 S-16 R6 G4 $17,500
A bit sharper. Medium brown with some faded spots of oxidation. Some field marks, but no corrosion. Rated G4 CC#10 in the WCN census, CC#12 by DNB. This is a rare variety and at this point a lot of bars for the buck compared to a common type coins. Ex. John Wright.
1794 S-17a R5 G4 $ 675
Sharpness VG, but dark and thoroughly porous. Clearly identifiable. All detail sharp obverse and reverse.

FOURTH FINEST KNOWN 1794 S-45
1794 S-45 R5+ VF20 $12,500
Sharpness EF45, but most of the obverse has been burnished in an attempt to remove a few contact marks, the smoothing most evident in the field under the cap and around the pole where it exits the neck. The only burnishing done to the reverse was in small areas to remove a nick at the base of the U and to remove a couple nicks over N in ONE and under O in OF. The planchet is hard and glossy, completely free of any roughness or defects. The only notable contact marks are a nick in the dentils under the 9 and a rim bruise just left of the fraction. Glossy chocolate and darker steel brown. LDS, Breen state II. The arc die crack at ICA and the fraction is clear. Called AU50 net VF25 and tied for CC#4 in the Bland census. Ex. Michael R. Kirzner 2/71-Denis W. Loring 2/71-John W. Adams-Dorothy Paschal 5/77-Denis W. Loring 12/77-R.S. Brown, Jr., Superior 9/30/86:60-R.S. Brown, Jr., Superior 1/27/96:64.

Blundered Edge Letters. A few points sharper with a dozen or so shallow pitmarks scattered over the obverse. Lightly cleaned and retoned glossy steel with chocolate toning in protected areas. 1794 S-48 R5 PCGS FR2 $12,000
Starred Reverse. Full portrait and Liberty, but the date is gone. The reverse, however, shows about half the stars. Dark brown and granular. But find another starred reverse is a PCGS holder.
CHOICE 1794 S-48 STARRED REVERSE
1794 S-48 R5 G4 $14,500
The obverse is a solid G6 with full date, portrait, and Liberty. The reverse is well worn with vestiges of the wreath and legends and may be ten or so stars showing. The story of this coin is the beautiful tan color and smooth surfaces. A rarity among starred reverses of any grade.
1794 S-51 R5- VG10 $ 1,200
F12 Chocolate steel fields with tan devices. Finely granular under a glass.
1794 S-54 R3 VG8 $ 575

1794 S-64 R5- PCGS MS64 RB $240,022
Missing Fraction Bar. Choice lustrous light steel brown with 20-25% of the original mint red remaining. The surfaces are satiny and this cent would be, as Ted Naftzger liked to say, “Bulletproof” as a gem if not for a collection of shallow planchet voids in the field left of the date and lowest curl. Otherwise, this cent is virtually perfect reminiscent of the finest of the famous Baron St. Oswald 1794 cents. MDS. The strike is needle-sharp and the missing fraction bar feature is obvious. Both sides of this cent are plated in the Elder-Gilbert book. Called MS65 and CC#2 in the Bland condition census behind a slightly finer example that retains none of its original mint color.
Ex. Henry C. Miller, Thomas L. Elder 4/1917:696-Dr. George P. French-B. Max Mehl FPL 1929:73-T. James Clarke 10/1954-R.E. Naftzger.
