1804 C-2 R6 G6. Recolored medium brown color with worn surfaces front and back. The Manley state 3.0 cud over ERTY is very strong. The left obverse and left rim are weakly struck, as usual. There is a vertical, linear indentation that appears to be mint-made near the right rim just below the large cud. The left reverse is weakly struck, as usual. There are circular hairlines that arch over UNITED STATES. There are no major digs or scratches. The reverse is rotated 30 degrees CW. Ex Waretown Stamp & Coin (NJ)-eBay 2/06 (unattributed)-Ed Fuhrman 2/20/06-Michael Spurlock.
M&G assessment: Concur. VG8+ net G6. There are specks of verdigris on the reverse and the planchet is very slightly bent. Recolored a slightly glossy dark steel brown and chocolate. Terminal die state, later than Manley state 3.0. A crack from the bust tip extends up to the rim short of the Y, and the area outside this crack is starting to sink into a retained cud break, strongest at the top. Apparently unique as a terminal die state.
1804 C-3 R7 VG10 This variety that was delisted by Cole as a rare die state of C-5 was struck prior to the damage to the obverse die that created the spike chin variety. This obverse die was also used to strike 1804 C-1, C-5, C-6, C-7, & C-8. The reverse is an easy die state of the C-4 and C-5 reverse. There is no doubt this example was struck prior to the damage to the obverse die. This spikeless chin variety is undoubtedly very rare and collectible. Sharpness of very fine or better, but some scattered pitting reduces the net grade. The color is medium olive brown. Ex. Leonard Wingo-RSB
M & G assessment: Concur VF25 net VG10. Undoubtedly from the early C-3 die state.
1804 C-4 R5 VF25. Glossy olive and chocolate brown. The surfaces are smooth and choice, virtually flawless. The search for an identifying mark reveals a faint horizontal hairline scratch through the lower lip, but it takes a strong glass to see it. M-LDS, Manley state 3.0 early. The reverse is rotated 15 degrees CCW. A choice example of this rare variety. In the middle of the condition census. Ex Kenneth Pines-Jim McGuigan-Dr. Wallace Lee, Superior 5/28/89:39-Dr. Wallace Lee, M&G Auctions/Superior 5/25/03:163-Ed Fuhrman 2/28/06-Michael Spurlock.
M&G assessment: Concur.
1804 C-5 R4 EF40. Spiked Chin. Choice color and surfaces. The only imperfections visible without the aid of a strong glass are a light nick at the top of the hair and a small mark above the E in LIBERTY. The reverse is free of visible circulation marks. Rare Manley state 5.0 late. A bulge is very visible in the right field. The letters ES OF are weak as usual. All of the state 5.0 diagnostic cracks are clearly visible, and at times you can see what may be the start of the state 6.0 crack down to the M. This was the Jim McGuigan collection piece for nearly three decades. Removed from an NGC slab graded AU58BN (#1721414-005). Ex Roger S. Cohen, Jr.-William R. T. Smith 8/74-Jim McGuigan-William Eckberg 4/13/06-Michael Spurlock.
M&G assessment: EF40 net VF35. Lightly cleaned and nicely recolored frosty bluish steel and chocolate brown. Smooth and attractive.
1804 C-6 R2 AU50. Spiked Chin. Frosty dark bluish steel brown with
peeps of faded mint red showing on the reverse. There are a few minor nicks on
the cheek and neck. A faint spot of reddish brown toning is located just right
of the ear. Manley state 2.0, Braig 1.45. Removed from a PCGS slab graded
AU53BN.
M&G assessment: Concur. AU55 net AU50.
1804 C-6 R2 AU58. Spiked Chin. Choice, near mint state coin with only
the slightest evidence of wear. Nice light reddish brown color with some areas
of steel colored toning. Obverse is struck slightly off center with a strong
rim and Dentilation on the left with little rim and no Dentilation on the
right. No mentionable marks. This was Gene Braig’s collection piece (Gene said
this was the “nicest example I had seen to date and I chased the variety
seriously.”) Manley state 11.0, Braig state 8.0. Removed from a PCGS slab
graded MS60BN. Ex Tangible Investments of America 4/91-Gene Braig
3/14/07-Michael Spurlock.
M&G assessment: AU55. Frosty medium brown with a splash of reddish brown toning at the 18 and traces of faded mint color showing through in protected areas of the reverse.
