1795  C-4  R3  VF20.  Punctuated Date with Plain Edge.   Steel brown color with smooth surfaces.  The color on the devices is lighter due to wear.  There is a planchet clip at 3:30.  The state 2.0 bulge right of the face is prominent.  There are no detracting marks on the obverse.  The reverse of the coin has the normal diagnostics for state 2.0.  There is a faint hairline scratch from the left inside center berry across CE in CENT.  There is a thin cut on the denticles from K-8 to K-9.  Weight 78.7 grains.  Removed from an ANACS slab graded VF30.  Ex Norman Pullen 3/30/90-Ray Rouse-Jim McGuigan 7/19/05-Michael Spurlock.

M&G assessment:  VF30 sharpness net VF25.  Mostly glossy dark olive brown with slightly lighter brown highpoints.  The surfaces are  decent but do have extremely faint roughness under the glossy patina.  A minor planchet clip affects the dentils right of the bust tip.  The line in the dentils at NITE appears to be a thin planchet crease or void rather than a scratch.

1795  C-5a  R3  AU50.  Plain Edge without Pole.  Thin Planchet.   Third or fourth finest example known.  Beautiful even light brown color.  Hard glossy reflective surfaces.  Well struck obverse with the lightest friction on the highest points.  Dentilation is weak from K-7 to K-9 on the obverse and above D STAT on the reverse.  HALF CENT is weakly struck.  No mentionable detracting marks.  Harry Laibstain comments:  “Super smooth fields and perfect chocolate color.  Fantastic originality and considered choice by even the fussiest EAC men.”  Manley state 1.0.  Weight 75.6 grains.  Removed from a PCGS slab graded AU55 (#6594856, population 8/8).  Ex Harry Laibstain 8/15/05-Michael Spurlock.

M&G assessment:  Concur.  Slightly sharper with a barely visible rim bruise at ST.  Choice glossy medium brown and chocolate.  A beautiful half cent.

1795  C-5b  R4  VF30.  Plain Edge without Pole.  Thick Planchet.   Lovely light brown color with hard smooth surfaces.  Some very small rim ticks at 12:30, 5:00, and 7:00.  The only mentionable mark on the reverse is a light hairline scratch above N in UNITED.  There is a tiny planchet void at the bottom of the denticles above the A in STATES.  Weight 115.7 grains.  Ex Jon Hanson-Doug Bird 3/17/06-Michael Spurlock.

M&G assessment:  VF30+ net VF25.  The three rim marks on the obverse appear to be from small tacks used to secure this piece to a display board, and the tacks disturbed the dentils.  Glossy chocolate and steel brown with reddish brown specks on the reverse.

1795  C-6a  R2  AU55.  Plain Edge without Pole.  Thin Planchet.   One of the finest known of the variety.  Even dark steel brown color on both sides.  The coin is very glossy and reflective.  Full Mint State details.  The coin is missing obverse denticles from 2:30 to 5:30 on the obverse and from 1:00 to 5:30 on the reverse.  This coin was struck over a TAL cent with light undertype visible from the second T in STATES and on the rim extending down the side of the rim.  Other evidence of undertype is visible on the rim above the second T in STATES and left of AMERICA.  A tiny tick is noted above 1 in the date and a microscopic mark on the highest point of the cheek.  Neither of these is visible without a strong light.  Called MS60 in the Stack’s description 1/17/2006.  Manley state 1.0.  Weight 83.3 grains.  Ex Stack’s 1/17/06:1756-Michael Spurlock.

M&G assessment:  Concur.  AU58 net AU55.  Virtually mint state but lightly cleaned and nicely retoned glossy dark olive and reddish steel brown.  Struck very slightly off center to K-4, and there is a tiny rim bruise at the O in OF.  Great eye appeal.

1795  C-6a  R2  EF45+.  Plain Edge without Pole.  Thin Planchet.  Strong 1794 TAL Undertype.
Choice AU55 in terms of detail.  Struck over a Talbot, Allum & Lee token as usually seen.  A very attractive coin that shows pleasing light brown patina and smooth surfaces.  The reverse is quite clean and no noteworthy disturbances are found.  A delight for the collector.  Manley state 1.0.  Weight 94.1 grains.  Ex Richard Picker (privately)-Northern Bay Collection, Stack’s 3/8/06:3506 (via Jim McGuigan)-Michael Spurlock.

M&G assessment:  EF45 net EF40.  Five point deduction due to a small area of microscopic roughness off the bust tip.  Glossy olive and dark bluish steel brown.  Struck over a 1794 TAL Cent, and much of the undertype shows clearly, including all of YORK.  The reverse is AU50.

1795  C-6b  R6  VG8.  Plain Edge without Pole.  Thick Planchet.   A couple points sharper than VG8 with some fine porosity in the fields on the lower half of the obverse.  No verdigris, and the only other notable mark is a small rim nick just right of the fraction.  The date is clear (although not strong, as always with the thick planchet strikes) and the legends are bold.  Glossy medium brown and chocolate with some slightly lighter brown toning on the obverse highpoints due to a brushing or wiping.  Manley state 1.0.  100.3 grains.  Ex Bill Luckett-Bill Weber 4/89-Ken Seachman, M&G Auctions/Superior 2/22/05:1096-Michael Spurlock.

M&G assessment:  Concur.  VG10 net VG8 for minor roughness on the obverse, which was lightly cleaned and retoned.
