1793 C-1 R3+ PCGS AU55
A very pretty Half Cent. Light brown color with slightly prooflike, fully lustrous surfaces. An extraordinarily sharp strike, especially for this late die state. Manley die state 3.0 with the rim break over F. AME. There is a minute scratch in the obverse field K8 and a couple tiny rim marks K3 and K5. These imperfections are of very minor consequence. Ex. 1793 C-2 R3 AU50. One of the finest known examples of the variety. Wonderfully struck example that is well centered on both sides. Fully struck up beading. Even light milk chocolate brown on both sides. The surfaces are hard and smooth. The obverse shows a full rounded face and just the slightest hint of friction on the highest points, visible only with a strong glass. There is also a hint of mint red peeking through from LIBERTY. The reverse is also well struck with slight friction visible only on the highest points. The obverse has a very faint hairline on the face behind the nose. There are two small planchet voids on the edge of the rim at K-6 and K-7 on the obverse and one at K-11 on the reverse. It appears these were formed at the very end of a planchet strip. A void line in the planchet can be seen extending through the rim edge from one side to the other. There is also a very small rim nick at K-9 that is visible only on the obverse. There is some very light spotting in the left field that is visible only when the coin is turned under light. A very minute hairline is visible when the coin is turned under light as well. A very minute hairline is visible above the ES in STATES. The reverse is rotated about 40 degrees CCW. Edge lettering is normal. Weight 106.5 grains. Removed from a PCGS slab graded MS62BN (#21757453, population 2/5); and from an NGC slab graded MS63BN (#1635298-001, population 7/12). 1793 C-3 R3 VF30. (Needs conserving before writeup). The Stack’s 10/04 description: About Uncirculated-50 and exhibiting just a hint of microporosity visible only with a strong glass. This trace of porosity is limited primarily to the obverse and is well concealed by evenly balanced, medium chocolate brown and olive patina. The interior on either side is wonderfully defect-free, and there are only a handful of scattered trivial marks at the rims that hardly detract at all. It is a challenge to obtain this all-important, very rare single year type coin in any condition. In fact, the typical survivor tends to be either damaged, corroded, heavily worn, or some combination of the above. Specimens such as the coin offered here are few and far between indeed, and are unquestionably worthy of inclusion in even the most selective of collections! Manley state 1.0.
