1831 N-6 R1 PCGS MS65 BN $ 2,500
Large Letters Reverse. Highly lustrous bluish steel with a faint hint of reddish chocolate toning around star 7 from an old fingerprint. Very faint traces of another fingerprint show in the field around stars 12 & 13 and a few tiny ticks are located on the U in UNITED. Otherwise this cent is choice and offers excellent eye appeal. LDS with a partial double profile (caused by die bounce) on the front edge of the coronet, browlock, lips, and stars 7-13. Called MS63 choice and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #27002. Our grade is MS62. PCGS Population 2; none finer. Ex. Thomas L. Elder 6/1926:1781-Henry C. Hines-Floyd T. Starr, Stack’s 12/4/84:1677-Herman Halpern, Stack’s 3/16/88:423-John J. Nicholas, Superior 2/2/92:561-Ted Naftzger Collection.
FINEST KNOWN 1831 N-8
1831 N-8 R3 PCGS MS64 BN $ 2,750
Large Letters Reverse. Lustrous light olive and bluish steel with very subtle overtones of sea green on the reverse. The surfaces are satiny and flawless except for a spot of darker reddish chocolate toning in the field over the upper left point of star 12. MDS with a fine die crack through the bottom of UNITE and the ribbon tip into the field under the wreath plus another through the top of TED-ST. A third tiny die crack connects the tip of the wreath stem to the foot of the adjacent A. Sharply struck with full radial lines in all the stars. The reverse is rotated 30 degrees CCW from a normal head-to-foot orientation. Called MS65 and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #21350. Bland says MS60+ and tied for CC#2. Our grade is MS64. PCGS Population 1; none finer. Ex. Homer K. Downing-Abe Kosoff-Numismatic Gallery 7 & 8/1951:863-C. A. Darnell, Abe Kosoff 5/3/52:555-Ted Naftzger Collection.
POSSIBLE FINEST KNOWN 1831 N-9
1831 N-9 R2 PCGS MS64 BN $ 1,650
Large Letters Reverse. Frosty light to medium brown with a couple subtle wisps of slightly darker bluish steel toning on the obverse. A small spot of reddish chocolate toning at the dentils left of the lowest point of star 2 and a tiny tick just right of the lower lip, plus a small planchet flake from the upper left point of star 5 to the dentils. The section between the two cracks joining star 4 & 5 has not started to rise. Called MS60+ and CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 and tied for CC#3, his photo #21215. Our grade is MS62. PCGS Population 1; none finer. Ex. George E. Chatillion, B. Max Mehl MBS #92, 11/1938:1784-unknown-Garry F. Fitzgerald-C. Douglas Smith 5/8/83-Ted Naftzger Collection.
1831 N-10 R3 PCGS MS62 RB $ 1,450
Large Letters Reverse. Frosty mint red fading to steel brown, at least a third of the mint color remaining. A speck of greenish verdigris at the rim left of the first S in STATES and a streak of darker toning slanting under the Nin CENT are the only significant marks. Unfortunately this cent was poorly struck, especially on the portrait. The strike is quite similar to what you so often see on the N-3, N-5, and N-7 Small Letters Reverse cents of 1829. Late die state with a rim cud break at star 9 and a die crack from the first S in STATES along the wreath to the dentils over the left side of the O if OF. Late state examples of this variety usually come softly struck, but the strike on this example is especially weak. Ungraded by Noyes due to the strike, but his photo # is 55083. Our grade is MS60. PCGS Population 1; 1 finer in 66RB. Ex. Tony Terranova-Ted Naftzger Collection.
EQUAL FINEST KNOWN 1831 N-14
1831 N-14 R4 PCGS MS63 BN $ 4,500

Matthews, Superior 5/28/89:731-DR. Robert J. Shalowitz 10/89-Ted Naftzger Collection.
