1846 N-18 R1 MS62                 $1575

Lustrous steel brown with at least 10% of the mint red remaining, mostly on the reverse. The fields are satiny and nearly free of marks. A small, very light scuff in the field over star 8 and a small spot of reddish brown toning at the left side of N in CENT are the only defects, and they are trivial. LDS, die state f. The die cracks at MER are clear and a tiny lump has formed on the bottom edge of the outer hair bun. Strong strike doubling shows on much of the reverse, clearest at OF AMER. Removed from an NGC slab graded MS65BN (NGC label included). A beautiful cent, very close to MS63. Tied for CC#4 in the Grellman census. DWH #2057.

Ex Doug Bird 6/96-R. S. Brown, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 6/2/2002:315.
