Choice lustrous light steel brown. Just a bit of
light wear on the hair at the ear, but everything else is consistent
with a higher grade. The extra wear at the center of the obverse is
caused by the central bulging always seen on this obverse, a result
of excessive lapping during die preparation. The only defects, and
they are trivial, are a small spot of reddish brown toning in the
center of the cheek, a tiny rim nick at star 6, and a splash of
reddish brown toning at TAT in STATES. Rare LDS, die state c,
with a sharp die line added through the stem end. Great eye appeal
for the grade. CC#3 behind two slightly finer examples, but this
piece is the finest of the late state by a wide margin. And it comes
with a very nice provenance. DWH #2101. |
