Item#1125 – 1854 N-19 R3 PCGS graded MS63 Brown
Extremely Rare N-19 with Rotated Reverse
Lustrous bluish steel brown with 10% of the mint color showing on the obverse and 35% of the red remaining on the reverse. Had to be very close to receiving an “RB” grade from PCGS. A choice example if not for a couple minor contact marks including a thin vertical nick above star 2, a tiny nick close under the chin, and a small spot of dark toning at the dentils right of star 9. A pair of shallow low spots or planchet flakes are located just above the bisecting crack left of star 8, as struck. MDS, die state b. The bisecting obverse die crack is clear (and slightly stronger than on the preceding example) and the reverse is rotated 105 degrees CCW relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. Tied for CC#2 overall for the variety but finest by a wide margin among the very few known with a rotated reverse in the Grellman census. Comes with a nice provenance. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1, 5 finer in BN: 3 in 64, 1 in 65, 1 in 66.
