PCGS authenticated and graded MS 63 RB. Frosty mint red mellowed to medium brown and light steel. There are a couple inert carbon specks under T and to the right of Y in LIBERTY. Otherwise smooth and lustrous, free of notable marks or detractions. Breen Die State II with clash marks in the fields of the obverse, a die crack through the left field to the hair and neck, and another on the reverse from R in AMERICA down through ICA. Described as “Finest known” in Eugene Gardner Collection sale, as well as called CC#1 by Bland, though Noyes is much more critical and calls it CC#6. Definitely among the finest known. This is also the plate coin for the variety in the Breen Encyclopedia, and for the die state in the 2015 Noyes large cent reference.
